How to minify JSON
Minified JSON is smaller, faster to transfer and just as valid as the formatted original. This guide explains what minification does, how it differs from compression, and why your data stays exactly the same — all using a free tool that runs entirely in your browser.
Try the JSON MinifierWhat is JSON Minification?
JSON minification removes unnecessary whitespace and formatting characters from JSON text while preserving the underlying data exactly. Spaces between properties, indentation, line breaks and other formatting whitespace outside string values are stripped away, producing the smallest possible valid JSON.
For example, this formatted JSON:
{
"name": "John",
"age": 30,
"active": true
}
becomes:
{"name":"John","age":30,"active":true}
The parsed data is identical — only the formatting has been removed.
Why Minify JSON?
Minifying JSON can provide several benefits:
- Smaller text payloads — removing whitespace reduces the number of characters in the file.
- Less unnecessary whitespace — indentation and line breaks are useful for humans but not required by machines.
- More compact API responses — minified JSON takes up less space in transit and in storage.
- Reduced transfer size — smaller payloads can mean less bandwidth used in some situations.
Minification does not guarantee a specific performance improvement. For network transfer, compression methods such as GZIP or Brotli typically provide far larger savings than minification alone. Minification is most useful when compression is not available or when you want the smallest raw JSON file.
Does Minifying JSON Change the Data?
No. Proper JSON minification preserves the parsed data exactly. The process is:
- Parse the input JSON into its in-memory representation.
- Re-serialise that representation with no unnecessary whitespace.
Because the data is round-tripped through a parser and a serialiser, the values, keys, types and structure all remain the same. The only change is the removal of formatting characters that were not part of the data itself.
Importantly, whitespace inside string values is never removed. The string "Hello World" stays "Hello World" after minification — those spaces are part of the data, not formatting.
JSON Minifier vs JSON Formatter
These two tools do opposite things:
- Minifier — removes formatting. It strips whitespace, indentation and line breaks to produce the most compact JSON possible.
- Formatter (Beautifier) — adds formatting. It inserts indentation and line breaks to make JSON easier for humans to read.
You might minify JSON for production use and format it again when you need to read or edit it. The JSON Validator can format, validate and minify JSON in one place.
JSON Minifier vs JSON Compressor
Minification and compression are different processes:
- Minification removes formatting characters (spaces, tabs, newlines) from the JSON text itself. The result is still valid JSON text — just with less whitespace.
- Compression (such as GZIP or Brotli) encodes the file using a binary algorithm that replaces repeated patterns with short codes. The result is binary data that must be decompressed before it can be read as JSON.
Minification reduces the text size. Compression can reduce it far more, but the output is no longer human-readable text. For best results, you can minify first and then apply compression — the minified text often compresses better because there are fewer unique patterns.
Is Minified JSON Valid JSON?
Yes. Correctly minified JSON is fully valid JSON. The JSON specification does not require any whitespace — it only permits it for readability. Removing whitespace produces JSON that any standards-compliant parser can read without issue.
The only thing to watch for is that minification tools must preserve whitespace inside string values. A proper minifier parses the JSON and re-serialises it, which guarantees that string contents are never altered.
How to Minify JSON
- Paste your JSON into the editor above, or upload a
.jsonfile. - Click Minify JSON to validate and compress it.
- If valid, the tool shows the minified output with a before/after size comparison.
- Copy or download the result as
minified.json.
If your JSON is invalid, the tool shows a clear error message with the line and column where the problem was found. Fix the error and try again — invalid JSON cannot be minified.
Minify JSON in your browser
Because minification is a pure text operation, it runs entirely client-side. Your JSON never leaves your device — important for privacy, speed and offline use. Try the JSON Minifier now, or use the JSON Validator to validate and format JSON.

Does minifying JSON change the data?+
No. Proper minification parses the JSON and re-serialises it with no unnecessary whitespace. The values, keys, types and structure all remain the same — only formatting outside string values is removed.
Is minified JSON still valid?+
Yes. The JSON specification does not require whitespace; it only permits it for readability. Correctly minified JSON is fully valid and can be parsed by any standards-compliant parser.
What is the difference between minification and compression?+
Minification removes formatting characters from the JSON text, producing smaller but still readable JSON. Compression methods such as GZIP encode the file as binary data that must be decompressed before reading.
