How to format YAML

YAML's indentation-based syntax is powerful but fragile. This guide explains what YAML formatting is, why indentation matters, and how to format YAML safely — all using a free tool that runs entirely in your browser.

What is YAML?

YAML ("YAML Ain't Markup Language") is a human-friendly data format used for configuration files, structured data and inter-process messaging. Unlike JSON or XML, YAML is designed to be easy for humans to read and write — it uses indentation for structure rather than braces, brackets or closing tags.

A simple YAML document looks like this:

name: SolveWithTools
version: 1
features:
  - JSON tools
  - XML tools
  - YAML tools
active: true

YAML is used everywhere in modern software:

  • Configuration files — application settings, environment configuration
  • CI/CD — GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI and most modern pipelines
  • Kubernetes — pod manifests, deployments, services and Helm charts
  • Docker Compose — multi-container application definitions
  • Infrastructure tooling — Ansible playbooks, Terraform, AWS CloudFormation
  • Application configuration — Rails, Spring Boot, Node.js apps

What is a YAML Formatter?

A YAML Formatter takes YAML text and applies consistent indentation and formatting to make it easier to read. It parses the YAML to confirm it is valid, then re-serialises it with your chosen indentation (2 spaces or 4 spaces).

Formatting preserves the YAML data — mappings, sequences, comments, anchors, aliases, block scalars and multi-document separators are all kept. Only the presentation whitespace is normalised.

Why is YAML Indentation Important?

Unlike JSON or XML, YAML uses indentation as structure. Incorrect indentation does not just make YAML hard to read — it can change the meaning of the document or make it invalid.

For example, this YAML:

server:
  port: 8080
  host: localhost

means something completely different from:

server:
 port: 8080
host: localhost

In the second example, host is no longer inside server — it is a top-level key. A single space of difference changes the entire structure.

This is why a YAML formatter is valuable: it normalises indentation so the structure is unambiguous and consistent, making the document easier to read, debug and maintain.

YAML Formatter vs YAML Validator

  • Validator — checks whether your YAML can be parsed correctly. It reports errors with line and column information but does not change the YAML.
  • Formatter — improves readability by applying consistent indentation. A formatter should validate first — if the YAML is invalid, it cannot be formatted.

The YAML Formatter validates before formatting. If your YAML has a syntax error, the tool shows the error with the line and column where the problem was found, so you can fix it before formatting.

YAML vs JSON

YAML and JSON are both data serialisation formats, but they have important differences:

  • Readability — YAML is generally more human-readable, with less punctuation and no required braces or commas.
  • Structure — YAML uses indentation for structure; JSON uses braces {} and brackets [].
  • Comments — YAML supports comments (# comment); standard JSON does not.
  • Features — YAML supports anchors, aliases, multi-document files, block scalars and custom tags — features that standard JSON does not directly represent.
  • Parsing — YAML is more complex to parse because indentation is significant; JSON has a simpler grammar.
  • Compatibility — YAML is a superset of JSON — every valid JSON document is also valid YAML.

YAML vs XML

YAML and XML serve different purposes:

  • YAML — data serialisation and configuration. Lightweight, indentation-based, human-friendly.
  • XML — markup and structured documents. Tag-based, supports attributes, namespaces, schemas and validation.

YAML is typically used for configuration files and data exchange where human readability matters. XML is used where document structure, attributes and schema validation are needed.

How to Format YAML

  1. Paste your YAML into the editor above, or upload a .yaml or .yml file.
  2. Choose your indentation (2 spaces or 4 spaces).
  3. Click Format YAML to validate and beautify the document.
  4. Copy or download the formatted result as formatted.yaml.

If your YAML is invalid, the tool shows a clear error message with the line and column where the problem was found. Fix the error and try again — invalid YAML cannot be formatted.

Format YAML in your browser

Because YAML formatting is a pure text operation, it runs entirely client-side. Your YAML never leaves your device — important for privacy, speed and offline use, especially when working with configuration files that may contain credentials or infrastructure settings. Try the YAML Formatter now, or use the JSON Validator to validate and format JSON.

Frequently asked questions

Does formatting YAML change the data?+

No. A proper formatter preserves the YAML data — mappings, sequences, comments, anchors, aliases, block scalars and multi-document separators are all kept. Only the presentation whitespace is normalised.

What is the difference between formatting and validating YAML?+

Validation checks whether your YAML can be parsed correctly. Formatting applies consistent indentation for readability. A formatter validates first — if the YAML is invalid, it cannot be formatted.

Is formatting YAML safe?+

Yes. When formatting runs in your browser, your data is never uploaded to a server. The parser uses safe parsing mode and does not execute YAML tags or construct arbitrary objects.
