Frequently asked questions

What is an XML sitemap?+

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the URLs on your website that you want search engines to crawl and index. It uses a standard format defined by the sitemaps.org protocol, with each URL wrapped in a <url> element inside a <urlset> container.

What is sitemap.xml?+

sitemap.xml is the conventional filename for an XML sitemap file. It is placed at the root of a website so search engines can find it at a URL like https://example.com/sitemap.xml.

How do I create an XML sitemap?+

Enter your URLs manually or scan a website to discover links, set optional last modified dates, change frequencies and priorities, then click Generate XML Sitemap. Download sitemap.xml and upload it to the root of your website.

How many URLs can an XML sitemap contain?+

A single XML sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must not exceed 50 MB uncompressed. If you have more URLs, you need to split them across multiple sitemap files and use a sitemap index.

Where should I upload sitemap.xml?+

Upload sitemap.xml to the root directory of your website so it is accessible at https://example.com/sitemap.xml. Search engines look for the sitemap at this location.

Does an XML sitemap improve SEO?+

An XML sitemap helps search engines discover your URLs, but it does not guarantee indexing or ranking improvements. It is a discovery aid, not a ranking signal. A sitemap is most useful for new or large websites.

Should every website have an XML sitemap?+

Not every website needs one. Small websites with good internal linking may not benefit from a sitemap. Sitemaps are most useful for new websites, large websites, sites with frequently changing content, or sites with pages not well linked from other pages.

What is the difference between sitemap.xml and robots.txt?+

sitemap.xml provides a list of URLs you want search engines to discover. robots.txt provides instructions to crawlers about which parts of your site they should and should not crawl. They serve different purposes and work together.

How do I submit a sitemap to Google?+

Upload sitemap.xml to your website root, then sign in to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap URL under the Sitemaps section. Generating a sitemap does not automatically submit it to Google.

Can I generate a sitemap without coding?+

Yes. Enter your URLs or scan a website, set your options and click Generate XML Sitemap. The tool creates a valid sitemap.xml file you can download and upload to your website. No coding is required.
