How to convert JPG to PNG
JPG is the most common photo format, but sometimes you need a PNG — for lossless storage, for a design workflow, or for further editing. This guide explains what the conversion does, when it's useful, and what it won't do — all using a free tool that runs entirely in your browser.

JPG is the most common image format for photographs, but sometimes you need a PNG instead — for lossless storage, for a workflow that expects PNG, or for further editing in software that prefers it. This guide explains what the conversion does, when it's useful, and what it won't do — all using a free tool that runs entirely in your browser.
Convert JPG to PNG online
The JPG to PNG converter re-encodes your JPG or JPEG image as a PNG file. Because PNG uses lossless compression, the converted file preserves the visual appearance of the original without introducing any new compression artefacts. The original dimensions are kept by default, with an optional resize if you need different output dimensions.
It's worth understanding what the conversion does not do: converting JPG to PNG changes the file format but does not automatically remove or create transparency. JPG does not support transparency, so a JPG image is fully opaque, and the resulting PNG will be equally opaque. If you need a transparent background, you'll need a dedicated background-removal tool rather than a format converter.
How to convert JPG to PNG
- Upload your JPG or JPEG image.
- Choose any optional resize settings.
- Click Convert to PNG.
- Download your PNG image.
You can convert multiple JPG files at once. The tool checks your remaining usage before processing, so if you upload more images than your allowance covers, it will tell you how many you can convert and offer an upgrade if you need more.
Why convert JPG to PNG?
- Compatibility with image-editing software. Some editors and design tools prefer or require PNG input, especially for workflows that involve layers, masks or transparency-aware operations.
- PNG workflows. If your pipeline (a build system, a CMS, or a design template) expects PNG assets, converting your JPGs keeps everything consistent.
- Lossless PNG storage. PNG is lossless, so once your image is a PNG, re-saving it doesn't degrade quality the way repeated JPG saves do. Note that this doesn't restore quality already lost through JPG compression — it just prevents further loss.
- Website graphics. PNG is well-suited to graphics with sharp edges, text or flat colours, where JPG artefacts would be visible.
- Further image editing. Because PNG is lossless, it's a safer working format when you plan to edit, crop or adjust an image in multiple passes.
JPG vs PNG
- JPG uses lossy compression. It discards visual detail to produce small files, which makes it ideal for photographs where small artefacts are rarely noticed.
- PNG uses lossless compression. It preserves every pixel exactly, which makes it larger for photographs but perfect for graphics, text and images where quality matters.
- JPG is often smaller for photographs. For complex, colourful photos, JPG can be dramatically smaller than an equivalent PNG.
- PNG is useful for graphics and images requiring lossless storage. Logos, icons, screenshots and diagrams benefit from PNG's lossless, artefact-free encoding.
- PNG supports transparency, but converting a JPG does not magically create transparency. Since the source JPG has no alpha channel, the PNG output will be fully opaque. To get a transparent background you need a background-removal tool, not a format converter.
After converting, you can compress the PNG to reduce its file size, or compress a JPG if you started with a large source and want a smaller copy in its original format.

Use toolFrequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?+
No. PNG is lossless, so the converted file won't degrade further on re-save, but it cannot restore detail already lost through JPG compression. The result looks the same as the source JPG.
Does JPG to PNG create a transparent background?+
No. Converting JPG to PNG changes the file format but does not remove or create transparency. JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG output is fully opaque.
Can I convert multiple JPG files at once?+
Yes. You can batch-convert multiple JPG or JPEG files and download them individually or as a ZIP. The tool checks your remaining usage before processing.
Is it safe to convert private images?+
Yes. Conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the image is never uploaded to a server.
