How the PDF Header & Footer works
- Your PDF is read into the browser and parsed by pdf-lib, a client-side PDF manipulation library.
- The header and footer text is drawn onto every page as a real text layer, using the font size, color, alignment and margin you chose.
- Optionally append Page X of Y to the footer, or insert {page} and {pages} placeholders anywhere in either field.
- The result is a standard .pdf file with the header and footer on every page, ready to download and share.
Useful tips
- Use {page} and {pages} in either field to place page numbers exactly where you want them.
- Keep font size around 9–11 pt to match typical body text; use 7–8 pt for discreet references.
- Remove passwords from encrypted PDFs first — protected files can't be read.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF sent to a server?+
No. The entire process runs in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF is never uploaded to any server, so it is safe to add headers and footers to sensitive documents like contracts or invoices.
Can I add just a header or just a footer?+
Yes. Either field is optional — leave one blank and nothing is drawn there. You need at least some header text, footer text, or page numbers to produce an output.
Can I add page numbers?+
Yes. Tick "Add page numbers to the footer" to append Page X of Y automatically, or type {page} and {pages} anywhere in either field to place numbers yourself — for example in a header.
Does it reduce the quality of the original content?+
No. The header and footer are drawn on top of the existing pages as a text layer — text, images, vectors and links all carry over without re-rendering or recompression. Only the new text is added.
Can I add a header and footer to a password-protected PDF?+
No. Encrypted PDFs can't be read without the password. Remove the password first, then add the header and footer to the unprotected copy.
